Gardener and Maintenance Hand

Main Position Objective

Reporting to the Garden and Grounds Manager this role is responsible for the planning, maintenance, upkeep and development of the Coombe Cottage Garden and Estate Grounds.

The key goals are to ensure the Gardens and Grounds at Coombe retain their historical significance and are maintained and presented at their seasonal best for daily garden tours and other events. 

This position requires a ‘can do’ attitude; a ‘hands-on’ physical approach; excellent time-management; flexibility with regards to seasonal influences; and a team-focused work ethic

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities
Functions, duties and responsibilities necessary to accomplish main job objective.

Operational -

General Garden & Grounds work – planting, weeding, paths/debris management, watering, turf management, mowing, edging, pruning and seasonal feeding, upkeep of the estate pool, carpark and venue readiness.

Kitchen Garden – maintenance of the kitchen garden within budget constraints. Maintaining the various fruiting trees across the estate for kitchen use.

Seasonal planning and plant sourcing

Adherence to Garden OH&S - representation on CYV safety meeting, maintaining OH&S records (spray diaries, MSDS, spill kits, chemical storage & disposal, first-aid kits)

Estate Maintenance tasks – general repairs and upkeep across the estate where needed. 

Equipment – maintain gardening equipment and gain servicing where required. 

 

Internal Relationships – 

Garden Tour & Events Teams – advice and assistance as required

Chef & Kitchen team – vegetable garden planning & planting
Management Team
Shareholders / Owners

 

External Relationships – 

Suppliers & contractors
Public tours as required

 

Occupational Health & Safety –

Maintain the standards of Occupational Health and Safety required by CYV at all times.

Principal skills, knowledge and personal attributes required

Education Qualifications: Horticultural qualification an advantage
Essential: Experience in a similar gardening role at a senior level
Desirable: Computer skills and financial literacy

This role will require a naturally energetic and flexible individual who is accustomed to working in an outdoor environment, and has proven capacity to work well under pressure, in a solo and small team setting. It will also require the capacity to deal effectively with multiple tasks and competing demands.


The role involves physical activity, hands-on involvement and may involve lifting and the ability to sustain a physically active role is important.

 Standing, walking:             80 - 100% (continuous)
 Talking or listening:             20-30% (continuous)
 Sitting: 0 - 20% (intermittent)
